Once completed, Deborah Hill’s testimony was a reasonable facsimile of Tamara Sloan’s. A two-hanky tear-jerker. Jenners winced. The narrow margin of plausibility he had painstakingly eked out had been vastly disturbed by Elizabeth’s typical reversal of the thought process. Once more, the thinking was heartfelt, bathed in tears. He simply would have to put on an encore performance, but could he sway they jury as he had yesterday. For almost anyone else, it would have amounted to an exercise in futility, an insurmountable challenge, but he was not merely anyone else. He was Hilton Jenners III and that made all the difference in the world.
He fingered his gold, silk tie lovingly and then rose to begin his cross-examination of the witness, Deborah Hill.
“And Miss Hill, did you suspect anything at all when you arrived at the day care center and saw Miss Sloan standing outside the reception area weeping?”
“No, not in relation to my son. To tell the truth I didn’t really think it could have anything to do with any of the children there.”
“And why was that?’
“I mean, well, I-I just thought the place was safe.” Deborah sighed. “I was wrong, though. The place wasn’t safe.”
“What were you told at that point?”
“Two officers informed me that my son was missing.”
“That’s what they said, missing? Not that your son had been hit by a car?”
“That’s what they might have said, but it wasn’t what happened. My son had been hit. And that’s a fact.”
“A fact is a fact is a fact,” Jenners chanted absently. He went to his table and shuffled through a stack of papers. He spoke over his shoulders. “What made the CMPD believe that your son was missing?”
“Because they’re stupid.”
The VIPs were silent. Half of the Others laughed.
“Oh yes,” Jenners mused, “the perils of police stupidity. Almost as bad as their brutality.” At last he found what he had been searching for. “I see from this sign-out sheet, that it was not uncommon for your son’s father to pick Warren up from day care.” He stood in front of the witness stand and gently released the single sheet of paper. It fluttered like a feather, dropping neatly in Deborah’s lap. “Do you recognize that as a copy of the sign-out sheet used at Safety Pins?”
“Yes.” Deborah spoke with certitude. “What about it?”
“Read over that for a second and then tell me if you see Warren’s father name on the log as the designated pick-up person.”
“That’s a fact and his name is on here quite a few times.” She pursed her lips. “I knew you would want to know how many times, so quite a few times should suffice as an answer.”
Jenners turned, facing the jury, a look of sheer appreciation on his face. “She helped me,” he gushed. “She helped me! I’m really, truly flattered and since she’s in such a helping spirit, I going to ask her if she could help us to understand why Edwards Sanders would be allowed to pick up her son from day care.
